Honored Alumni
The Kalāheo High School Foundation and Alumni Association established the Honored Alumni Award to recognized graduates with outstanding post-high school achievements. Each recipient received a certificate and a clear glass pyramid, in which floats the blue Kalāheo crest.
1999 Recipient
Wade Nakashima, Class of 1976
At the 25th Anniversary Luau, one of the school's first graduates was presented the first Kalāheo Alumni Honor Award. Wade Nakashima, Class of 1976, was recognized by the Foundation and Alumni Association for his personal and professional achievements, including his service to the community and the school.
As Foundation vice president, he chaired all of the 25th Anniversary events, helping to ensure that the Foundation met its endowment goal of $25,000. President-elect Bethanne McMonigle Enoki and other board members acknowledged Nakashima's outstanding commitment to his alma mater.
While a student at Kalāheo, Nakashima played all-star basketball for the Mustangs' 1976 championship team and continues to coach the sport with Kailua PAL. Nakashima is also active in his alumni group at Hawaii Pacific University where he earned a degree in business administration. He currently works for Tesoro Hawaii as Manager of International Crude and Product Supply.
Wade has served as president of the Kalāheo High School Foundation and Alumni Association from 2001 - 2005 and continues to serve on the board.

Kevin Butterbaugh, Class of 1977

At EDAW--a company providing land and community planning, urban design, landscaping architecture and natural resources management services--Kevin has focused on resource management planning and associated environmental analysis. He has overseen and continues to develop resource management plans for the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and comprehensive conservation plans for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. These plans and others have resulted in the formation of long-term management strategies for the responsible use and protection of public lands throughout the western United States.
Kevin mentors second/third year graduate students in the Cal Poly Pomona Alumni Mentoring Program. He co-chaired EDAW’s Year 2000 Summer Student Program, contributing many hours of pro bono work for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. He has guest lectured at the University of California, Berkeley, Extension Program, spoken at national meetings and conferences, authored articles in professional journals, and received several honors and awards, including Sigma Lambda Alpha, Landscape Architecture Honor Society.
Sarah Culpepper Stroup, PhD, Class of 1985
Assistant Professor of Classics at the University of Washington, Seattle, with specializations in literature, philosophy and archaeology. Sarah instructs both undergraduate and graduate students and publishes independent research in Classics and related fields. Every other year, she leads groups of students in a “Spring Quarter in Rome” Program which includes Roman topography, archaeology, architecture, and study of Greek and Latin. She has participated in excavations in Israel, Nemea and other sites. She is currently finishing up her new book, Textual Culture of the Late Roman Empire, and recently won a $250,000 Getty grant to take students to the Tel Door archaeological excavation in Israel.
Sarah has authored several academic articles and is working on others, including two book-length manuscripts. In addition to impressive academic service, she has delivered papers at several professional meetings and conferences. She has also received academic and professional honors and awards, including four fellowships at UC Berkeley and Phi Beta Kappa at UW Seattle.
Jeff Yee, Class of 1990
eCare Product Manager, AT&T Wireless Services, Redmond, WA. B.S., Mechanical Engineering, University of Hawaii at Manoa. M.S. in Management, Antioch University
In his current position and previously at McCaw Cellular, Jeff has been involved with many Internet technology and wireless data projects. Jeff designed and implemented the first installation of Online Customer Service, constructed ecare.attws.com using a combination of Java Servlets and WebObjects technologies, and implemented in both HTML and HDML for desktop PCs and wireless phones, respectively. He also organized a product team of 30 leads, developers and analysts responsible for functions of requirements gathering, design, construction and support of the Web site, and was responsible for the $8 million project budget. More recently, he managed AT&T Wireless’ wireless portal.
In 1994, Jeff completed a year-long, NASA-funded research project, collaborating with McDonnell Douglas engineers and the DC-X rocket program, and writing a study on tri-propellant rocket engines published by NASA. His honors include the Everett E. Black Scholarship for Academic Achievement, NASA Space Grant Fellowship, State of Hawaii Student Employee of the Year, and AT&T Wireless Circle of Excellence.
In his community, Jeff constructed Web sites for Medina Children’s Services in Seattle, a non-profit children’s adoption program. Jeff has been a generous contributor to the Kalāheo High School Foundation and Alumni Association since 1992 when he became its first alumni member.
